Arc flash study services · Qatar
Every bus from HT to LT calculated. Every label printed, pasted and photographed on the panel it belongs to. Signed by a Chartered Engineer and independently reviewed.
An arc flash study calculates the incident energy available at every point a worker can open a panel, and prints that figure on the panel. It is built from a site walkdown, a modelled network, a short circuit calculation and a protective device coordination study. The output is a report, a set of labels, and a marked boundary. In Qatar, VB Engineering has delivered more than 1000 studies since 2014.
Most disputes on an arc flash contract are not about price. They are about what was in scope. IEEE 1584.1-2022 exists for exactly this reason · it is the specification standard for procuring a study, and it is the document your scope should be written against.
A scope that will survive a technical bid evaluation names six things.
Which boards are studied, listed individually. The published threshold is 208 V three-phase and above. A scope that says "all switchgear" will be priced by every bidder differently, and compared by none of them fairly.
Single line diagram, relay and fuse settings, cable schedules, transformer nameplates and the utility fault level at the point of common coupling. Missing utility data is the single commonest cause of a study stalling.
A plant with a generator has more than one fault level. Utility-fed, generator-fed, tie open, tie closed. Each is a separate calculation. A study modelled on one configuration has not modelled the plant.
IEEE 1584-2018 for AC incident energy. Its validated range is 208 V to 15 kV. Above that, and on any DC bus, the method changes · say so in the scope rather than discovering it at the modelling desk.
Report, labels, boundary marking, updated single line diagram, and the conformance matrix. State the label count and who installs them. Printing and installing are different line items and bidders price them differently.
Name the qualification required on the signature, not just the deliverable. A study is an engineering opinion. The signature is what makes it one.
Writing the scope yourself? The VB Arc360 brochure sets out the same six headings as a programme, with the review clock and the renewal cycle. and we will mark your draft scope against IEEE 1584.1, whether or not you invite us to bid.
The 2027 edition took effect on 6 May 2026. Any study, label or training record written against the 2018 or 2024 edition is now describing a superseded document. That is the first thing an auditor checks and the cheapest thing to get wrong.
Compliance is not a single act. It is a calendar, and it is the part of the standard the market markets least.
| Obligation | Interval | What satisfies it |
|---|---|---|
| Arc flash risk assessment reviewed | 5 years, or on any change that affects the result | A re-run of the calculation, not a re-read of the report |
| Field work audited | Annually | Observation of work practices against the written programme |
| Lockout / tagout procedure audited | Annually | Procedure audit and correction record |
| Electrical safety programme audited | 3 years | Programme-level audit, documented |
| Retraining of qualified persons | 3 years | Records naming the person, the content and the date |
| Equipment labelled and legible | Continuous | Labels that survive the environment they are installed in |
Compliance is not lost at year five. It is lost in year two · when the network changes, a breaker is replaced, or a label fades, and nothing triggers a recalculation.
Running that calendar as six separate purchases is how it slips. VB Arc360 is the same calendar bought once, with the study, the labels, the training and the renewal on one clock.
Not sure which obligations you are already meeting? Send us your last study date and your training records.
Two rows of that table are people, not paperwork. Retraining every three years, and an annual audit of how work is actually performed. We deliver both in VR, in a modelled switchgear room, so a qualified person rehearses the approach boundary and the permit before he meets them on a live board.
In Qatar the labels we print carry Arabic and English on the same face, because the workforce reading them does. Qatar is one of the countries known for the highest safety standards at the workplace, and a label a fitter cannot read is not a control.
An arc flash study is not priced by the size of the site. It is priced by the number of things that have to be calculated and labelled. Two plants on the same footprint can differ threefold in price, and the reason is almost always in the bus count rather than the acreage.
Five drivers move the number. The bigger the estate, the more each one costs.
The unit of work. Every board modelled, every panel labelled. This is the number to put in your enquiry · it is what any competent bidder will ask for first.
A drawing set that matches the plant saves weeks. One that does not means the walkdown becomes an as-built exercise before the study can start.
One configuration or four. Generators, ties and alternate feeds each multiply the calculation, not the site.
Data collected during a turnaround is quicker and safer than data collected around live operations. Turnaround procurement typically opens 12 to 18 months ahead.
Printing is one line. Printing, installing on the correct panel and photographing each one is another. We do the second.
Where incident energy exceeds what PPE can protect against, the study should propose settings or equipment changes. That is engineering work, and it is scoped separately.
Send us your bus count and we will tell you what the study involves · not a figure from a table, a scope against your plant.
Our engineers attend site and record every board, nameplate and relay setting. Capture is done on ElecTwin, our own field application, so a missed panel or an illegible setting surfaces on site rather than at the modelling desk three weeks later. Rework on a fixed-price study is not billable. It is loss.
The system is built in ETAP, SKM PTW or CYME, to whichever platform your existing model already lives in. Naming the toolset is a matter of credibility, not preference.
Fault levels at every bus, then protective device coordination. Clearing time drives incident energy more than fault current does · which is why a coordination study is not an optional extra to an arc flash study, it is an input to it.
Incident energy calculated to IEEE 1584-2018, arc flash boundary determined, PPE selected against the result rather than against a category table.
Labels are produced in Arabic and English, installed on the panel they describe, and photographed in place. The photographs are part of the deliverable, because an uninstalled label protects nobody.
Drafted by the Practice Lead, independently reviewed by the Principal Reviewer, signed by a Chartered Engineer.

A report is a claim. A painted boundary and a trained crew are the two places an arc flash study stops being a document.
Both of these are stages of VB Arc360 · the programme that carries the study, the labels, the boundary marking and the retraining on one renewal clock.
An arc flash study is an engineering opinion that a plant will rely on when deciding whether a person may open a panel. Ask three questions of any bidder, and ask them before price.
The engineer building the network model, and what they have modelled before in your plant type.
Whether review is independent of the person who built the model, or the same engineer checking their own work.
The named qualification on the signature. Ours is a Chartered Engineer, with independent review before release.

Six things: the equipment schedule with the 208 V three-phase threshold stated, the data you will supply, the operating scenarios to be modelled, the calculation basis, the deliverables including label count and who installs them, and the qualification required on the signature. IEEE 1584.1-2022 is the standard written to govern exactly this.
Bus and panel count first, then whether a current single line diagram exists, how many operating scenarios must be modelled, the access and shutdown windows available, and the number of labels printed and installed. Cost scales with the estate calculated, not with the site area.
NFPA 70E 2027 requires the risk assessment to be reviewed at intervals not exceeding five years, and whenever a change occurs that could affect the result. Field work is audited annually, the programme every three years. A study is not a document with a five-year shelf life; it is a calculation that a network change invalidates.
The published threshold is 208 V three-phase and above. In practice that means every switchboard, MCC, distribution board and control panel a qualified person may open while energised. List them individually in the scope rather than writing "all switchgear".
Most of it, yes. Nameplate data, board schedules and cable routes are collected from outside the enclosure. What cannot be captured live is anything requiring a panel to be opened, and that work is scheduled against your shutdown or turnaround window rather than forced into it.
We print Arabic and English on the same label face as standard. A warning label is a control only if the person exposed to the hazard can read it, and the workforce on a Qatari industrial site reads both.
We mobilise engineers to site for the walkdown wherever the plant is. Data capture is done on site by our own engineers, not subcontracted, and the modelling, review and sign-off are done by the same practice that attended.
A question that is not answered here? Ask it directly and a Chartered Engineer will answer, not a sales desk.
Fault levels at every bus. An input to the incident energy calculation, not a separate purchase.
Clearing times drive incident energy. Coordination is where a high number is usually brought down.
The three procurement documents to issue before a study starts, and the eleven clauses that belong in the RFQ.
What NFPA 70E 2027 requires after the study is signed · the annual audits, the three-year retraining and the five-year recertification, on one clock.
How the walkdown, the modelling and the label installation are carried out, step by step.
Halve the clearing time and you roughly halve the incident energy. Coordination is the lever.
Tell us the plant voltage, the number of boards and whether a current single line diagram exists. A Chartered Engineer responds inside 24 hours, and we will mark your draft scope against IEEE 1584.1 whether or not you invite us to bid.
