Why as-built engineering in Qatar starts with a reconciliation, not a redraft

Across the QatarEnergy LNG mega-trains at Ras Laffan, the Mesaieed industrial base, and the North Field Expansion build-out, a reconciled as-built drawing package is what every regulator, insurer, and digital-twin handover ultimately depends on. Qatar's industrial spine is QatarEnergy's LNG and gas-processing complex at Ras Laffan and Mesaieed, plus the petrochemical platforms (QChem · Qatofin · QAPCO). The North Field Expansion (NFE / NFS) is adding 49 MTPA of LNG capacity between 2026 and 2027, making the country the densest concentration of new LNG capacity globally. Ras Laffan is unique in the LNG world: a single mega-cluster operated by a single integrated owner. The brownfield engineering opportunity here is enormous because NFE adds capacity adjacent to the existing trains, and the existing trains all need re-baselining as the surrounding electrical environment changes.

The drafting standards we apply on Qatar as-built engagements

P&ID and instrumentation drafting follows ISA S5.1 with PIP PIC001 as the reference for process-industry symbology. Isometric drafting follows ISO 6428. Where the operator references QatarEnergy Engineering Specifications (QGS / QP-STD) · IEC 60909 · IEC 61936 · IEC 60079 · IEEE 1584, the deliverable formatting layer aligns to it; line numbering, equipment tagging, and revision-control discipline are invariant.

Process Drawing Updates

Process flow diagram (PFD), heat and material balance, and utility flow drawings updated against the as-found process configuration. Where the process has drifted from the original design (a recurring finding on plants over 20 years old in Qatar), we document the drift and align the deliverable to the operating condition.

Asset Register + Digital Twin Hand-Off

Equipment tag list, line list, and instrument index reconciled to the point cloud. The full package hands directly to the Wistwin digital-twin platform or the operator's asset-management system with no re-registration required.

Reconciliation Walk + Discrepancy Log

LiDAR-backed reconciliation against the legacy P&ID / GA / isometric package. Every discrepancy logged with point-cloud screenshot, equipment-tag location, and recommended disposition. The log becomes the basis for the formal as-built revision.

P&ID Rebuild or Markup

P&ID drafted to ISA S5.1 in your CAD environment (AutoCAD P&ID, SmartPlant P&ID, AVEVA P&ID, Bentley OpenPlant). Where the existing P&ID is recoverable, we mark up to the as-found condition; where it is not, we rebuild from the field plus operator interviews.

Isometric Drawing Production

Isometric drafting from the LiDAR point cloud against ISO 6428 conventions. Spool list, fabrication isometric, and weld-map deliverable structure depending on the downstream workflow.

GA + Plot-Plan Reconciliation

GA drawing reconciled against the as-found equipment layout. Plot-plan updated with the new equipment positions, elevations, and access-route updates. Tie-in to civil + structural drawings where the operator package is integrated.

QatarEnergy LNG (Ras Laffan)

a 7.8 MTPA LNG train with 132 kV intake and electric-drive main refrigeration compressor.

The engagement: NFE adjacency demanded short-circuit reassessment of the existing trains; harmonic load flow + new MV switchgear coordination integrated with QatarEnergy AMS.

Qatofin / QAPCO (Mesaieed)

a polyolefins complex with 66 kV intake and 11 kV distribution.

The engagement: Insulation coordination after Kahramaa upgraded the 66 kV feeder switchgear; SPD selection + ground-grid reconciliation.

Qatalum (Mesaieed)

an aluminium smelter with 220 kV intake and pot-line rectiformer banks.

The engagement: Pot-line harmonic management at the PCC; tuned filter design + harmonic measurement campaign + QGS-format report.
