Why India brownfield work starts with a LiDAR walk, not a model rebuild

Across the 21 refineries, 35 GW of thermal capacity, and 600+ industrial estates that anchor India's manufacturing base, a LiDAR-backed reconciliation walk is what makes every downstream engineering deliverable trustworthy. India runs one of the most concentrated brownfield retrofit markets in the world: 21 refineries operating between 1965 and 2018 vintages, 35 GW of thermal capacity overdue for arc flash recertification, and a pharma cluster (Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Ahmedabad) where every API plant carries IS 5571 hazardous-area exposure. India's greenfield era is largely past for refineries and metals. The next decade of value comes from brownfield expansion, debottlenecking, and digital-twin handover on plants that are 15-40 years old. The capture and registration standard we work to in India

Capture follows ISO 17123-9 for instrument verification with point-cloud registration to ASTM E2807-08 closure tolerances. Where the operator references IS 3043 (earthing) · IS 5571 (hazardous area classification) · IS/IEC 60909 (short-circuit) · IS 13947 (LV switchgear), the deliverable formatting layer aligns to it; the underlying capture methodology is invariant.

Pre-Capture Survey + Permit Pack

Walk-down survey with the plant electrical authority, hot-work and high-altitude permit alignment with plant electrical authority + DGCA for drone permission, target-network design and ground-control survey. Capture begins only after the safety stack is signed.

Tripod LiDAR Capture (Static Scanning)

Leica RTC360 / FARO Focus Premium static capture at sub-3 mm accuracy. Density tuned to the level of detail required: 6-12 mm at process-equipment level, 25 mm at building-envelope level. Coverage planned around the Indian brownfield plant constraints (live plant, restricted shutdown windows).

Drone and Mobile LiDAR (Where Tripod Cannot Reach)

Drone-LiDAR for elevated structures, mobile-scanner trolleys for corridor-heavy plants, handheld LiDAR for restricted bays. The combined capture closes the coverage gaps a tripod-only survey leaves behind.

Point-Cloud Registration to Plant Grid

Closure error under 15 mm at the project extents; under 8 mm typical in dense equipment zones. Plant grid established or reconciled at the start, every cloud registered to it, no floating sub-models.

Deliverable Library + Access Setup

Structured E57 / RCP / LGS library with metadata, plus web-viewer access for plant engineering and contractor review. Asset register linked to point-cloud coordinates so the operator can navigate by equipment tag.

Hand-off to As-Built or Digital Twin Workflow

Registered point-cloud library hands directly into the as-built engineering workflow (P&ID, isometric, GA) or the the digital twin platform digital-twin platform, with no re-registration required.

a USFDA-inspected API plant with Zone 1 process bays.

The engagement: A short-circuit incident at the LT panel during expansion forced unplanned EHS audit; client needed CEng-signed Arc Flash + Coordination study in 18 working days.

a 5 MTPA integrated steel plant with 220 kV captive power + EAF + LF + caster.

Does the study come with CEng MIE FIE sign-off the way CEIG and PESO expect?
Yes. Every deliverable carries a wet signature from a Chartered Engineer holding both MIE (India) and FIE membership, which is the recognised authority CEIG and PESO inspectors accept for relay-coordination and arc-flash documentation.
Will you reconcile to our existing CEIG-approved SLD or start from scratch?
We reconcile. If the CEIG-stamped SLD exists, we mark up deviations, walk the plant with LiDAR, and produce a delta report. We only rebuild from scratch when the legacy SLD is unrecoverable.
Can you support a PESO licence renewal audit timeline?
Yes. The standard PESO renewal cycle gives 90 days notice. We have completed an end-to-end Power System + Arc Flash + Insulation Coordination package inside 21 working days when the timeline demanded it.
