Arc Flash Study Standards & Compliance

Causes of Arc Flash can be a failure in the operation of the protective devices, Working on an energised line, accumulation of severe dust and dirt creating a conductive path, an undesired path for the fault current, unprofessional handling of the equipment, faulty switching practices, operating tools handling by the operating personnel. The arc if quenched in a prescribed time is not hazardous. But when its not mitigated in the stipulated time it leads to many a hazards listed above. Untrained working personnel with little knowledge on the hazardous environment, or the potential of voltage and current levels that he is working, careless practices of required PPE , ignorance on part of the operating personnel as to the incident energy, safe operating distances, unable to identify Arc Flash Hazard working conditions. These are some of the main reasons in severe injuries and fatalities in Arc Flash Incident. In all such cases the level of hazard remains to be grave and leads to heavy fines on part of the management, hospital expenses, liability in insurance claims, property damage and capital costs. These account to be in millions of Dirhams. Hence the regulatory bodies like OSHA 29 CFR 1910, NFPA 70 E, IEEE 1584- 2018, IEC-60079-17 emphasise on an Arc Flash Study to be carried out periodically and to implement the Arc Flash Study Requirements invariably.
Some of the after effects of an Arc Flash are:
Electric shock
Severe burns
Arc Flash leading to temporary or permanent blindness
Arc Blasts

ARC Flash Study Analysis

With the acquired data, our team of experts develop a single line diagram using SKM power tools, ETAP. Develop models with the implementation of novel softwares and technologies like NEPLAN, EDSA, Cymdist, Arc Pro. The SLD preparation takes into consideration all the equipment of about 30 KW and more, sources, Buses, Power generators, transmission and distribution networks, type of grounding implemented, capacitors, reactors, MCCs, control panels, switch boards, type pf protective devices, fuses, motors operating at voltage levels of 600V, 400V. It is widely seen that Arc Flash occurs at voltage levels of 400 V and other high voltages. Hence the data corresponding to operating voltages of less than 240 V is not taken into consideration except in cases where it poses a 120 KA, or other low impedance loads that may cause Arc Flash Hazard. The development of SLDs also prove to be advantageous in identifying unused or unnecessary establishments in the utility or the possibility of expansion for future use. At VB Engineering we provide you with panel wise drawings for easy assessment complying with the international standards and Arc Flash study requirements.

The Arc Flash Calculation is the main aspect of Arc Flash Analysis. IEEE 1584-2018 has formulated specific models in calculation of bolted fault current, Incident energy, Arc current, normalised incident energy, RMS values of bolted fault currents, frequencies of operation, operating system voltage, distance of operation, gap between the conductors where the arc occurs, type of enclosures, types of electrodes deployed, types of phases and grounding as per the standards.

Arc Flash Calculation

Calculations pertaining to Arcing Current, normalised incident energy, incident energy based on the data of types cables, MCCs, control panels, switchgear, enclosure types implementing the formulas formulated by IEEE standards.

Short Circuit Coordination Study

The operating characteristics of the protective devices and circuit breakers from the data acquired is USED in short circuit coordination study. The TCC characteristics depicting the clearing time, tripping time. Protective relay characteristics depicting the delay time, relay operating time are used to determine the short circuit coordination study.

Arc Flash Hazard Solutions and Report

The calculation of working distance and incident energy are calculated from the mathematical models developed through sophisticated software. Incident energy is determined for all equipment depicted in the SLDs. The Arc Flash Boundary is calculated and thus elaborates on the safe operating distance, Flash Protection Boundary, Limited approach boundary, Restricted approach boundary, Prohibited Approach Boundary calculations are determined based on the regulations of NFPA 70 E. Arc Flash Hazard Analysis confers the information about the Arc Flash Boundaries of operation with and without PPE. Also these calculation help in identifying the right PPE for the deenergised and energised working conditions. Arc Flash Risk Assessment is realised with these findings. All calculations are strictly evaluated in complying with the OSHA, NFPA 70 E, NESC, NFPA, NFPA 70 B, IEEE 1584- 2018.

Arc Flash Study Report formulation

With all the calculations, SLDs, Arc Flash Hazard Analysis, Short Circuit coordination Study, a detailed report is formulated providing with the necessary guidelines, methods to mitigate the arc faults, installation of new devices, suggest the right PPE, Labelling at different installations emphasizing on the Arc Flash Hazard. With VB Engineering, the Arc Flash Study cost proves to be an invest on the long run for the reliable operation of the facility. A cost effective Arc Flash Study Report is our metier.

Arc Flash Study Training

At VB Engineering we provide a necessary training to the working personnel. The Arc Flash Boundaries and the safe operating distances evaluation is primarily done to distinguish between the “qualified” and the “unqualified” as termed by IEEE standards. Arc Flash Study training includes the reading and understanding of the Arc Flash Hazard labels. In view of the workforce primarily involved in various industries and facilities in KSA, Riyadh, Dammam and the regions in the area, VB Engineering is the first ever Arc Flash company to release Arc Flash Hazard labels in the Arabic language besides English. This enhances in the understanding of the risk of the equipment that they are working on and to exercise the required PPE and follow the OSHA, IEEE standardised operating distances. The Arc Flash study training enables the working personnel to use the right eye ware, headphones when the Arc blast sound is over 85 DB as specified by the OSHA standards. Training the workforce may not prove to be an extra expense on part of the management but paves a way of mitigating the Arc Flash Hazards, the associated perils of injuries and fatalities to the operating personnel, the equipment protection and a preventive measure of dangerous accidents at the firms as most of the industries in KSA are operated at highly flammable environment.

As per international standards Arc Flash Study is to be carried out for every 2 to 3 years and with an increment or decrement of load by about 30 %. Safe guard you firm today. Contact our VBE consultant today for effective Arc Flash Study.

ARC Flash Safety Scope

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with its wide range of industries, and its vast scope of development each year needs to meet up with the challenges yoked with this increase in the possibility of development. The construction industry, Oil and gas companies, ship and aircraft repair on commercial grounds, fertilizers, petroleum industries, electrical transmission and distribution in both residential and industrial sectors add a lot of other business opportunities witness an enormous growth rate in the past few years. There exists always a lot of work force in these establishments for the plain operation like monitoring, maintenance, identifying new branches of development, possible incorporation of new technologies. All these factors contribute to KSA being considered as the “energy super power”. Electrical energy is the main source of energy in keeping these facilities up and running, running at satisfactory levels. A great deal of challenges like losses, short circuits, failure of protective devices, Arc Flash Hazards are to be met with utmost care. Arc Flashes engrossing the main contributor of dangerous accidents, severe injuries and even fatal accidents is being addressed by the companies. The percentage of these injuries also has put the regulatory bodies like OSHA, NFPA, IEEE 1584 to set safety regulations that are to be met so as to ensure the safety of the most valuable asset of any industry- the working personnel. KSA is very keen in implementation of the safety standards and takes the necessary measures to put a check on noncomplying firms by levying heavy fines of thousands of Dirhams.

Our expertise team served the companies in Jeddah and Riyadh from Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for multiple projects over a decade.

An Arc Flash or Flash over is an unwanted and unforeseen danger that has the possibility of occurrence at a wide range of facilities irrespective of its size. A 1-phase or a 3-phase fault occurring at any point of the facility may lead to an Arc Flash. The fault causes a fault current and an undesired discharge between two conductors. And when this discharge is supplied with a sufficient amount of energy it leads to an ionisation of the air around it further creating a plasma along with high amounts of heat energy, light and sound. The deafening sound of about 160 DB causes rupture in eardrums. The heat energy associated with an Arc Blast is of 35000 Fahrenheit. The Flash of light may cause blindness to the operating personal. The Arc Blast leads to the melting and explosion of the surrounding equipment releasing the molten metal and shrapnel with a tons of pressure. Arc Flash Hazards lead to death and severe burns to the operating personnel.
